It sank 40 years ago, known as “shipwreck” of Epanomi, during the dictatorship was carrying out soil transfer works in order to fill with earth an outstanding beauty and unique natural beauty habitat, inhabited by hundreds of species of fauna and grow about 2,500 flowers and plants.
All these were ready to be sacrificed to create farmland. Villagers say that Saint Anthony saved the habitat, as the ship was abandoned by the company which undertook the project, rusted and sank the day of the feast of the saint, around 1970.
A few months later, the dictatorial regime necessarily expropriated an area of about 4,500 square meters, covering the area of the Potamos and the Shipwreck and the nature preserve. The aim was the tourist development, that never happened. A few months ago, the State Council vindicated the municipality of Thermaikos and its efforts and now the whole area was returned to the ownership of the municipality.
